Rock Creek Ranch

In this Texas hunting ranch review, Rock Creek Ranch (RCR) features two hunting ranches located in Central Texas that specialize in trophy whitetail deer and exotic game hunts. One property is located in Copperas Cove, while the other sits in Llano, known as the “Deer Capital of Texas” in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Although the ranches are only about an hour apart, each property provides a unique hunting experience with distinct terrain, accommodations, and wildlife.

The ranches provide fully guided hunts for amateurs and experienced hunters. Hunting methods include using a bow, rifle, handgun, crossbow, hunting from a blind, safari-style hunts, and spot-and-stalk hunts. RCR focuses on creating a high-quality hunting experience while still keeping trips affordable and enjoyable for guests.

Family-owned and operated since 1990, Rock Creek Ranch was founded by lifelong Texan and hunter Mike Franz. RCR was built around a passion for the outdoors and sharing the traditions of Texas hunting culture with others. Guests are welcomed with comfortable lodging, quality meals, and traditional hunting customs designed to create a memorable and fair hunting experience.

Together, the two properties cover approximately 1,300 acres that have been carefully managed over the years to sustain strong populations of whitetail and exotic game. Hunters can choose from a variety of trophy hunts, including aoudad sheep, axis deer, blackbuck antelope, fallow deer, red sheep, red stag, and scimitar-horned oryx. Many of these exotic species can be hunted year-round, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to experience authentic Texas hunting in the Hill Country.

Whitetail Hunting Ranch in Texas

Whitetail Hunting Ranch in Texas

Rock Creek Ranch is a whitetail hunting ranch known for its native Texas Hill Country whitetail deer, which have been carefully managed and raised for more than 20 years. RCR focuses on maintaining healthy, natural whitetail herds rather than pen-raised animals, giving hunters the chance to experience authentic Texas deer hunts in the animals’ natural habitat. Both the Llano and Copperas Cove ranches offer whitetail deer hunts, with trophy bucks ranging from around 115 inches to over 200 inches SCI.

Hunters at RCR can choose from several hunt styles depending on personal preference and current weather or habitat conditions. Available methods include bow and crossbow hunts, rifle hunts, pistol hunts, spot-and-stalk hunts, ground blinds, and vehicle-based safari-style hunts. The variety of hunting options makes the ranch suitable for both experienced hunters and beginners looking for a true Texas hunting experience.

The ranch also operates under Level 3 Managed Land Deer (MLD) permits through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This program extends the whitetail hunting season from late September through February. Hunters can also harvest deer without using tags from their regular hunting license, which adds extra convenience during the hunt.

Whitetail hunts at RCR are built around strong wildlife management practices, including herd management, predator control, and nutritional supplementation to help produce quality trophy deer. The Texas rut season usually becomes most active between November and late December, and this is often when rattling techniques are used during hunts. Overall, the ranch offers a traditional Hill Country hunting experience focused on natural whitetail deer and well-managed trophy hunts.

Exotic Hunting Ranch in Texas

Aoudad Hunts in Texas

Rock Creek Ranch is also an exotic hunting ranch in Central Texas offering a wide variety of exotic hunts for popular game animals such as aoudad sheep, axis deer, blackbuck antelope, fallow deer, red sheep, red stag, and scimitar-horned oryx. The ranches in Copperas Cove and Llano feature distinct environments and opportunities, allowing hunters to experience a true Texas Hill Country exotic hunt.

Aoudad sheep are among the most challenging animals to hunt at RCR. Hunts take place mainly at the Copperas Cove location, where the population has been carefully managed for more than 15 years. Trophy aoudad regularly exceed 30 inches, rendering them favored among hunters seeking a difficult and rewarding experience.

Axis deer hunts are especially popular because of the combination of trophy quality and excellent meat. Many hunters consider axis deer their favorite exotic species on the ranch, and spring hunts, especially in May, tend to book quickly. RCR is also known for its trophy blackbuck antelope hunts offered at both properties. Years of selective breeding have helped produce impressive blackbuck with horn measurements commonly over 18 inches, with some reaching over 23 inches.

Fallow deer hunts are available at the Copperas Cove ranch and give hunters the chance to pursue several color variations, including white, spotted, chocolate, and traditional fallow deer. Although there is no official hunting season for fallow deer in Texas, the best time to hunt them is usually from September through February when they are hard-horned and no longer in velvet.

The Llano ranch is home to trophy red sheep, known for their elusiveness and difficulty in approaching. Many of these sheep average over 30 inches, and the meat is lean, dark, and highly valued for its flavor. Red stag hunts are available at both properties and are considered one of the most exciting experiences offered at RCR. The rut season begins around September, after the stags shed their velvet in July and August, creating an active and thrilling hunting environment.

Scimitar-horned oryx hunts are offered year-round at both properties. Both males and females carry long horns that can range from 30 to 45 inches, and these large game animals commonly weigh more than 350 pounds. Along with being an impressive trophy animal, the oryx is also known for having some of the best-tasting exotic meat available. Overall, RCR offers a well-managed, diverse exotic-hunting experience with quality trophy animals and authentic Texas Hill Country scenery.
